Marimurtra Botanical Garden

10Nov

Discover the marvellous Marimurtra Botanical Garden

In Blanes we have one of the most beautiful, spectacular and interesting gardens you will find on the shores of the Mediterranean: the Marimurtra Botanical Garden.

The Marimurtra Botanical Garden is located just above the cliffs of Sa Forcanera. Thanks to its location, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the sea.

The garden covers an area of sixteen hectares, four of which are open to the public. They are divided into three gardens of different characteristics:

  • The Subtropical Garden, the Temperate Garden and the Mediterranean Garden.

Carl Faust, the founder of the Marimurtra Botanical Garden

Carl-Faust-Caseta-dels-guàrdies

The founder of the garden was Carl Faust, a German businessman who settled in Catalonia in 1897. Despite his commercial activity, he was a person who always showed a great passion for the natural sciences.

In fact, his love of nature was so great that when he retired he invested all his fortune, effort and enthusiasm in the construction of the garden. In fact, from 1924 onwards, he devoted himself fully to it in order to fulfil his great dream. He wanted to build a meeting place for sages and young disciples that would favour their concentration and inspiration, and he succeeded in doing so.

The garden was classified as a Cultural Asset of National Interest by the Generalitat de Catalunya. The Carl Faust Foundation was also awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi Prize in 2009.

Children’s Weekend at Marimurtra

09Nov

On 14 and 15 November 2020, the Marimurtra Botanical Garden will open its doors to families. The Children’s Weekend is a promotion for all children up to the age of 11, who can visit the Costa Brava Botanical Garden for free during these days.

They will be able to discover the insect hotels that coexist in Marimurtra and the more than 4000 species of birds that fly in the garden. They will also be able to observe how the garden takes advantage of natural resources to supply this large family, feeding the chickens, taking care of the organic garden and seeing how all these elements relate to each other.

The Marimurtra Botanical Garden of Blanes, present at the Science Week

08Nov

The Carl Faust Private Foundation, owner and manager of the Marimurtra Botanical Garden, organises different activities during these November days on the occasion of the Science Week. The weekend of 09 and 10 November will offer different thematic tours, guided and free under the title “El Rebost de Marimurtra”, which will deepen in the techniques, strategies and philosophy of use of materials, as well as the values of biodiversity with which the garden works.

The next activity will take place on the weekend of 16 November, with the first edition of the “Marimurtra + Científic” workshop, a day to present and involve the general public in Marimurtra’s scientific activity. The day, on this occasion, will have three axes: proposals for volunteering in Marimurtra (local and international), herbarium (with a workshop and visit to the garden to collect plant material), and natural extracts (presentation of research projects done on Marimurtra in collaboration with the University of Girona).

The activities (visit to “el rebost” and workshop “Marimurtra+ Científic”) are free, but it is necessary to book in advance at www.marimurtra.cat or by calling 972330826.
